Brendan Fraser Could Return To Relaunch The Mummy Franchise?

As the Academy Awards approach, one film generating buzz is The Whale, starring Brendan Fraser. Fraser, known for his role in the popular Mummy franchise in the late 1990s and 2000s, has largely been out of the spotlight in recent years due to health issues and depression. However, his performance in The Whale has been praised and is expected to earn him an Oscar for Best Actor.

The Mummy franchise, on the other hand, has not had as much success in recent years. Tom Cruise's 2017 reboot, which attempted to launch a "Dark Universe" featuring other classic Universal monsters, was met with poor reviews and did not live up to the popularity of Fraser's trilogy. The first Mummy film, released in 1999, received a 61% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 75% audience score, while the latter two films received 47% and 13% respectively. Fraser's presence in the films was a key factor in their success, as his Indiana Jones-style adventure blended well with the classic monster tropes.

With Fraser's comeback in The Whale, there is potential for Universal to reintroduce him into the Mummy franchise and reignite their Dark Universe. The studio was on the right track in 2017 with their cast of talented actors, including Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem, and Sofia Boutella, but the execution fell short. By returning to the formula that worked with Fraser's trilogy, and possibly even bringing back some of the original cast, the Mummy franchise could be given new life.

While it is not confirmed if Fraser will indeed return to the Mummy franchise, his resurgence in Hollywood and the positive reception of The Whale have sparked speculation and interest in a potential return. If the opportunity presents itself, it could be a triumphant comeback for Fraser and a revival for the Mummy franchise.
