The combined HBO Max and Discovery+ streaming service could be dubbed 'Max.'

Warner Bros. Discovery plans to merge HBO Max and Discovery+ into a new streaming service. At the moment, it seems that "Max" is the favourite for the amalgamated platform's appellation, which would drop the most easily known component of HBO Max's branding.

The company's lawyers are examining numerous names, but Max is thought to be leading the pack. According to a Warner Bros. spokeswoman, the firm is currently debating the name. They'll have to make a choice soon, however, since the consolidated streaming service is set to launch in the spring.

HBO has earned a certain kind of respect throughout the years. However, executives at Warner Bros. Discovery are thought to see some benefit in presenting HBO as a sub-brand alongside Discovery and CNN. Following the merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery earlier this year, the company's CEO, David Zaslav, reduced funding on HBO Max. The streaming service will have much more to offer than just HBO programming.

According to CNBC, there has been some misunderstanding over the naming of HBO streaming applications – HBO Max came before HBO Go and HBO Now. Another one with HBO in the name might further complicate matters. Furthermore, officials are alleged to be concerned that the HBO Max moniker may diminish the value of HBO as a brand if customers associate it with less-prestigious material on the streaming service.

According to reports, the new platform will be structured similarly to Disney+, with hubs for content from HBO, Discovery, DC Comics, Warner Bros., and others (Disney+ includes hubs for Star Wars, Pixar, National Geographic, and others). It's unclear how much subscriptions to Max, or whatever it's called, will cost.
