For those who may not remember, Eleven's backstory is already full of trauma and heartbreak. She was abducted at birth and raised as a weapon due to her powerful psionic abilities. Despite her difficult upbringing, Eleven becomes a rebellious and determined character over the course of the show. However, her mother, Terry Ives (Aimee Mullins), attempts to save her and ends up permanently catatonic as a result. By the time of the show, Terry has been unable to speak in coherent sentences for a decade, only occasionally managing phrases related to her predicament.
In a tweet on the Stranger Writers account, the show's writers revealed that they had considered having Eleven mercy kill her own mother in season 2. This season saw Eleven reunite with her mother and her aunt Becky (Amy Seimetz). Eleven eventually runs away from her aunt, believing she will turn her over to the authorities, while also thinking that her mother wants her to find a fellow test subject, Eight (Linnea Berthelsen).
This revelation is undoubtedly a shocking one, as Eleven has already had her fair share of struggles and hardships. If the writers had gone through with this plot twist, the season would have ended on a much darker note. It's not the first change that the writers have discussed either. The Stranger Writers account has also revealed that Will nearly killed newcomer Bob Newby (Sean Astin) in season 2. As with that plot point, it's possible that the writers ultimately decided that this twist would have been too dark for an already extensively traumatized character like Eleven.
This change also leaves the door open for Terry Ives' possible return in a future season of Stranger Things. It also provides an explanation for why Becky has not been seen since season 2. If Eleven was originally meant to kill her mother, it's likely that Becky would have been devastated and unable to continue caring for her sister. It will be interesting to see if and how these characters are further explored in future show seasons.
