God of War Series: Amazon Takes on the Epic Tale of the 2018 Norse Reboot

Sony revealed earlier this year that God of War will be created as an Amazon Video series, and the current chapter, Ragnarok, has been a great success on PlayStation. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series is officially on the air, and we've learned more about what will happen.

The series will follow the main character Kratos, The God of War, through the events of the 2018 Norse mythology reboot. In doing so, he abandoned his violent background and fled to the Norse realm of Midgard.

When his beloved wife dies, Kratos embarks on a perilous trip with his estranged son to scatter her ashes from the tallest mountain - his wife's dying request," according to Amazon's description. [The journey] will challenge the connections between father and son, and push Kratos to combat new gods and monsters for the planet's destiny."

In collaboration with PlayStation Productions, Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios will create the series. Rafe Judkins of The Wheel of Time will serve as showrunner, assisted by Oscar winners Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Children of Men, Iron Man), who will write and executive produce.

The original God of War series, based on Greek mythology, concluded in 2013 with God of War: Ascension (PS3). It was revived in 2018 with the Norse mythology-based God of War on PlayStation 4, which led to God of War Ragnarök, which was published last month to critical acclaim.

Amazon is also preparing a Fallout series for Prime, which began production earlier this year and is expected to be released shortly. Other series based on high-profile games that have already been produced or will be released shortly include The Last of Us (HBO), Halo (Paramount), and Horizon Zero Dawn (Netflix).
