Warner Bros. Discovery's television-focused production arm is teaming up with Amazon Studios to develop new animated projects based on DC Comics IP, demonstrating how the firm is evolving under CEO David Zaslav.
Warner Bros. Television Studios chairperson Channing Dungey opened up about some of the major steps the business wants to make as part of Zaslav's vision for its future during a keynote presentation at C21Media's annual Content London event this week. According to sources, Dungey voiced enthusiasm for her section, in particular, citing Zaslav's willingness to collaborate with other production companies as one of the primary reasons. Unlike the previous generation, who believed that "everything has to remain in-house; we don't want anything to go outside," Dungey said Zaslav has been significantly more open to collaborating with others and bringing the studio's material onto platforms it does not control outright.

While Dungey did not go into depth regarding the massive Amazon contract, such as whether these new programmes would be available on both Amazon Prime and whatever HBO Max is destined to become, Zaslav made it plain earlier this month that he wants to double down on current IP like Superman. Zaslav has also declared his desire to return to the universe of Harry Potter in order to capitalise on the franchise's ongoing success, which Dungey reiterated and claimed that the studio is presently having "a lot of different talks about."
Given Warner Bros. Television's recent wave of layoffs and reorganisation, it seems natural that the studio is looking to outsource some of that labour to third parties. However, the optics of Warner Bros. Discovery using Amazon to crank out DC superhero-themed content while simultaneously attempting to figure out how to keep Harry Potter relevant are fairly gloomy, and it seems like Zaslav is determined to stick to his guns by returning to the well of big name IP.
